We're So Eggcited!

We woke up this morning to admire our blooming stocks and poppies and then we heard a strange, but familiar cackling sound coming from the backyard.

We ran out to the chicken coop and there it was, our first egg. Everything that we have read says that a chicken has to be 6 months old to lay an egg and we've only had our chickens for 4 months. Our chickens must qualify (at least 1 of them) for the ELP program. At our house that stands for the early laying poultry program. This has got to be equal to, if not greater than, Zuckerman's famous pig. We will be sure and let you know if any of our chickens start laying eggs in the shape of Mickey Mouse ears or any other cool shape.

The best part was that the chicken waited until a holiday to lay the first egg so that Paige and Kaylee could be home to share in the eggcitement.

It doesn't get any better than this!

We didn't name our egg, but we did just about everything else that we could do to celebrate its arrival, including giving it a face and finding a baby bonnet for it to wear.

How are we going to be able to eat something this cute?

As you can see, our chickens have a long way to go in laying the perfect egg. This egg was a bit small compared to some of the other store bought eggs that we had in the refrigerator. Hopefully, as our chickens get older the eggs that they lay will get larger. Is that how it works? If not, it is going to take a whole lot of these tiny eggs to supply the Cluff household. We know it's silly, but sometimes you just have to celebrate the small things in life. Literally! It doesn't take much to get the Cluff family eggcited!
